जय शाह इंटरनेशन क्रिकेट काउंसिल यानी आईसीसी के नए चेयरमैन बनने वाले हैं. महज 35 साल की उम्र में इस पद तक पहुंचने वाले वो सबसे युवा क्रिकेट प्रशासक हैं. हालाँकि लोगों का ध्यान इस ओर नहीं जा रहा है कि उनसे पहले कौन सबसे कम उम्र का क्रिकेट प्रशासक इस पद पर आसीन रहा है. दिलचस्प ये भी है कि ये पहला मौक़ा है, जब 57 साल से कम उम्र का कोई शख़्स आईसीसी का अध्यक्ष या चेयरमैन बन रहा है. विज्ञापन आईसीसी के पहले अध्यक्ष कॉलिन काउड्रे 1989 में जब अध्यक्ष बने थे, तब उनकी उम्र 57 साल थी.

कोलकाता के आर.जी. कर मेडिकल कॉलेज में ट्रेनी डॉक्टर की रेप और हत्या के मामले से पश्चिम बंगाल में राजनीतिक सरगर्मियां बढ़ी हुई हैं. विरोध-प्रदर्शन, बंद और हिंसा की घटनाओं के बीच अब प्रदेश के राज्यपाल सीवी आनंद बोस दिल्ली के लिए रवाना हो गए हैं. गुरुवार को भारतीय जनता पार्टी के प्रदेश अध्यक्ष सुकांता मजूमदार और वरिष्ठ नेताओं ने राज्यपाल से मुलाक़ात कर ज्ञापन सौंपा था. राज्यपाल से 'अनुरोध' किया था कि वह पश्चिम बंगाल में 'संवैधानिक मूल्यों की रक्षा' करें. इससे पहले 27 अगस्त को राज्यपाल ने भी बयान जारी कर 'पश्चिम बंग छात्र समाज' के बुलाए गए 'नबन्ना मार्च' (सचिवालय पर प्रदर्शन) के दौरान हुई हिंसा को लेकर राज्य सरकार की आलोचना की थी. विज्ञापन अब भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने राज्यपाल को जो ज्ञापन सौंपा है, उसमें मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी के उस बयान का उल्लेख किया गया है, जो उन्होंने बुधवार को दिया था.
भारत की दूसरी परमाणु पनडुब्बी आईएनएस अरिघात शुक्रवार को नौसेना में शामिल होने वाली है. ख़बरों के मुताबिक़ आईएनएस अरिघात रक्षा मंत्री राजनाथ सिंह और भारत के शीर्ष रक्षा अधिकारियों की मौजूदगी में नौसेना में शामिल हो सकती है. यह अरिहंत श्रेणी की भारत निर्मित दूसरी परमाणु पनडुब्बी है. अरिहंत को साल 2009 में भारतीय नेवी की फ़्लीट में शामिल किया गया था. भारतीय नौसेना पहले ही दो युद्धपोत से लंबी दूरी की परमाणु मिसाइलों का परीक्षण कर चुकी है. विज्ञापन भारत तीसरे नौसेनिक पोत को जल्द ही नौसेना में शामिल करने की तैयारी कर रहा है, जबकि दो अन्य नौसेना में शामिल होने को योजना का हिस्सा हैं.
छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज की प्रतिमा गिरने को लेकर एफ़आईआर में नामज़द स्ट्रक्चरल कंसल्टेंट चेतन पाटिल को कोल्हापुर पुलिस ने गिरफ़्तार कर लिया है. समाचार एजेंसी एएनआई के अनुसार, कोल्हापुर के एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने बताया, "छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज की मूर्ति के स्ट्रक्चरल कंसल्टेंट चेतन पाटिल को पुलिस ने हिरासत में लिया है." उन्होंने बताया, "उन्हें कोल्हापुर से गुरुवार आधी रात को हिरासत में लिया गया. सिंधुदुर्ग पुलिस की एफ़आईआर में वो नामज़द हैं. उन्हें सिंधुदुर्ग पुलिस के हवाले कर दिया गया है." महाराष्ट्र के सिंधुदुर्ग ज़िले के राजकोट क़िले में स्थापित छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज की प्रतिमा गिर गई है. यह प्रतिमा चार दिसंबर 2023 को नौसेना दिवस के अवसर पर स्थापित की गई थी. इस प्रतिमा का अनावरण प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने किया था. महाराष्ट्र के मुख्यमंत्री एकनाथ शिंदे ने कहा कि प्रतिमा नौसेना ने बनवाई थी और हवा की वजह से गिरी है. उन्होंने यह भी कहा है कि वहां जल्द से जल्द एक नई प्रतिमा स्थापित की जाएगी. उन्होंने बताया कि इस मामले में दो संयुक्त कमेटियां गठित की गई हैं. इसे लेकर महाराष्ट्र में सत्तारूढ़ महायुति गठबंधन सरकार और विपक्षी महाविकास अघाड़ी के बीच खींचतान बढ़ गई है. महाविकास अघाड़ी ने रविवार को प्रदर्शन का आह्वान किया है. राज्य में इसी साल के अंत तक विधानसभा चुनाव होने वाले हैं और इसलिए इस पर राजनीति भी तेज हो गई है.
कोलकाता के आरजी कर मेडिकल कॉलेज के अधिकारियों और पीड़िता के परिजनों के बीच फ़ोन कॉल्स की ऑडियो रिकॉर्डिंग के सामने आने से रेप और मर्डर मामले में विवाद बढ़ गया है. गुरुवार को सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल हुई रिकॉर्डिंग के बाद आरोप लगाए जा रहे हैं कि अस्पताल प्रशासन ने केवल 'ग़लत जानकारी' ही नहीं दी बल्कि रवैया भी 'असंवेदनशील' था. तीन ऑडियो क्लिप्स में पहला 71 सेकेंड का, दूसरा 46 सेकेंड और तीसरा 28 सेकेंड का है. सोशल मीडिया के अलावा कई निजी समाचार चैनलों ने इन्हें चलाया भी. खुद को अस्पताल की असिस्टेंट सूपेरिटेंडेंट बताने वाली एक महिला की ओर से पीड़िता के पिता को ये कॉल किए गए थे. हालांकि बीबीसी इस क्लिप की स्वतंत्र रूप से पुष्टि नहीं कर सकता, लेकिन कोलकाता पुलिस की सेंट्रल डिविज़न डिप्टी कमिश्नर इंदिरा मुखर्ज़ी ने इस पर सफ़ाई दी है. उन्होंने कहा कि 'इन ऑडियो क्लिप से ये साबित होता है कि हमने शुरू से ही कभी नहीं कहा कि मौत आत्महत्या से हुई. इस क्लिप से ये भी साबित होता है कि हमारी तरफ़ से कभी नहीं बोला कि ये आत्महत्या है.' पीड़िता के परिजन पहले ही कह चुके हैं कि नौ अगस्त की सुबह उन्हें अस्पताल से तीन बार फ़ोन आया और उसके बाद वो वहां पहुंचे. चादर बदलने को लेकर विवाद इस बीच गुरुवार को परिजनों ने शव को ढंकने वाली चादर के रंग के बारे में कहा था. इस विवाद पर डीसी इंदिरा मुखर्जी ने गुरुवार को मीडिया से कहा, "सोशल मीडिया पर कुछ वीडियो क्लिप वायरल हुई हैं और कुछ टेलीविज़न चैनलों में शव को ढंकने वाली चादर के रंग को लेकर बहस हो रही है.कहा जा रहा है कि पहले चादर का रंग का नीला था और बाद में इस रंग अलग था." उन्होंने कहा, "हमने उस दिन दोपहर 12.25 बजे फ़ोटोग्राफ़ी और वीडियोग्राफ़ी कराई थी. मैं कह सकती हूं कि चादर का रंग नीला था. कुछ लोगों का दावा है कि चादर का रंग हरा या कुछ और हो सकता है. लेकिन ऐसा नहीं है. हमने ये सारे रिकॉर्ड सीबीआई को सौंप दिए हैं."
गुजरात में लगातार हो रही भारी बारिश के कारण कई ज़िलों में बाढ़ की स्थिति बनी हुई है. भारी बारिश से प्रभावित वडोदरा, मोरबी और पोरबंदर ज़िलों में जीवन अस्त-व्यस्त हो गया है. हालांकि मध्य गुजरात में बारिश रुक गई है और पिछले तीन दिनों से पानी में डूबे वडोदरा शहर में बाढ़ का पानी उतरना शुरू हो गया है. लेकिन सौराष्ट्र और कच्छ में भारी बारिश से हालात गंभीर बने हुए हैं. गुरुवार को द्वारका, जामनगर, जूनागढ़, पोरबंदर, अमरेली और सुरेंद्रनगर जिलों में भारी बारिश हुई है. समाचार एजेंसी पीटीआई के अनुसार, इन तीन दिनों में गुजरात में 26 लोगों की जान चली गई है. गुजरात बाढ़ कच्छ में भारी बारिश के कारण मांडवी तालुका में हर तरफ पानी ही पानी है. यहां बड़ी रेलिंग में फंसे मजदूरों को निकाला गया. गुरुवार को भी राज्य के कई इलाकों में रेस्क्यू ऑपरेशन चलाया गया और लोगों को सुरक्षित स्थानों पर पहुंचाया गया. गुजरात सूचना विभाग के अनुसार, पिछले 24 घंटों में गुजरात में 1,785 नागरिकों को बचाया गया है और 13,183 लोगों को सुरक्षित स्थानों पर पहुंचाया गया है. बारिश के कारण वडोदरा में जगह-जगह पानी भर गयाइमेज स्रोत,ANI इमेज कैप्शन,सौराष्ट्र बारिश के कारण वडोदरा में जगह-जगह पानी भर गया इस बीच मुख्यमंत्री भूपेन्द्र पटेल ने जामनगर के बाढ़ प्रभावित इलाकों का दौरा किया, वहीं दूसरी ओर गृह राज्य मंत्री हर्ष सांघवी ने वडोदरा के बाढ़ प्रभावित इलाकों का दौरा किया. बाढ़ के हालात पर प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री भूपेंद्र पटेल से फ़ोन पर बात कर हालात की जानकारी ली है.
हाल के वक्त में कोलकाता में महिला डॉक्टर से बलात्कार और हत्या का मामला सामने आया जिसने लोगों को झकझोर कर रख दिया. ये मामला थमा ही नहीं था कि महाराष्ट्र के बदलापुर के एक स्कूल में दो नाबालिग़ों के साथ यौन शोषण और अकोला में स्कूली छात्राओं के साथ छेड़छाड़ की ख़बर आई. आम जनता ने सड़कों पर उतरकर विरोध प्रदर्शन किया. लोगों ने दोषियों के ख़िलाफ़ सख़्त रुख़ अपनाया और उनके लिए फांसी की मांग की. इसी माहौल के बीच बुधवार को एसोसिएशन फ़ॉर डेमोक्रेटिक रिफ़ॉर्म्स (एडीआर) की एक रिपोर्ट सामने आई है जिसके अनुसार 151 मौजूदा विधायकों और सांसदों के ख़िलाफ़ महिला उत्पीड़न के मामले दर्ज हैं. 300 पन्नों की इस रिपोर्ट में कितने सांसदों, विधायकों पर महिलाओं के ख़िलाफ़ अपराध, बलात्कार के आरोप लगे हैं इसकी जानकारी है. साथ ही ये भी जानकारी दी गई है कि कितने विधायक और सांसद किस पार्टी से हैं.

जनवरी 2022 से जनवरी 2023 के बीच चीनी नागरिकों के साथ हुए धोखाधड़ी के मामले में बीबीसी वर्ल्ड सर्विस ने अपनी एक साल की खोजी रिपोर्ट में पता लगाया है कि कैसे और कहां से निवेश के नाम पर लोगों से लाखों डॉलर की ठगी की गई. अपनी रिपोर्ट में चीन की ज़मीन से दूर से संचालित होने वाले निवेश के नाम पर चीनी नागरिकों के साथ धोखाधड़ी के इस मामले में बीबीसी वर्ल्ड सर्विस ने अपनी रिपोर्ट में पाया है कि कैसे जालसाज़ इस पूरे ठगी के प्रकरण को चीन से कई किलोमीटर दूर एक छोटे से द्वीप आइल ऑफ़ मैन से अंजाम दे रहे थे. आइल ऑफ़ मैन द्वीप में सरकार तो ख़ुद चीन की है लेकिन वो निर्भर ब्रिटेन के शाही परिवार पर है. आइल ऑफ़ मैन द्वीप पर समुद्र किनारे स्थित होटलों और पहले रहे बैंक कार्यालयों की इमारतों का इस्तेमाल चीन में कई लोगों को ठगकर लाखों डॉलर का चूना लगाने में किया गया है. हमें बताया गया है कि डगलस के सी व्यू होटल के डाइनिंग रूम और लाउंज में दर्जनों चीनी श्रमिक वहाँ मौजूद तेज़ इंटरनेट कनेक्शन से जुड़े कंप्यूटर्स पर काम कर रहे हैं.

बुधवार को उत्तराखंड सरकार ने राज्य में सभी फेरी-ठेली वालों को पहचान पत्र देने की घोषणा की थी. शहरी विकास निदेशालय ने राज्य के सभी नगर आयुक्त, अधिशासी अधिकारियों को पत्र जारी कर फेरी और ठेली वालों का विवरण जुटाने और पहचान पत्र जारी कर इन्हें अनिवार्य रूप से ठेली/फड़ पर प्रदर्शित करने के निर्देश दिए थे. इस पत्र के ज़रिए संबंधित अधिकारियों को निर्देश दिए गए हैं कि पहचान पत्र में फेरी व्यवसायी का कोड, नाम, पता, फ़ोटो अंकित होनी चाहिए. बहरहाल शनिवार दोपहर होते-होते हरिद्वार पुलिस ने इस फ़ैसले पर अमल करना शुरू कर दिया. पुलिस कांवड़ मार्ग पर लगने वाली खाने, फलों-सब्ज़ियों की रेहड़ियों और रेस्तरां-ढाबे वालों को नाम आदि डिस्प्ले करने या दुकान बंद करने को कहने लगी. मंगलौर बस स्टैंड के पास फलों की रेहड़ी लगाने वाले दिलनवाज़ ख़ान ने बताया कि पुलिसकर्मियों ने उन्हें नाम प्रदर्शित करने और वहां से रेहड़ी हटाने को कहा है. दिलनवाज़ नाम प्रदर्शित करने को लेकर आशंकित नज़र आए. उन्होंने कहा कि इससे तो नुक़सान ही होगा, “कोई भाई होगा तो ले जाएगा वरना तो कोई लेने से रहा.” यह आशंका और डर कांवड़ मार्ग पर कई लोगों में नज़र आया और ज़्यादातर तो बात करने को भी तैयार नहीं हुए... क्योंकि वह नहीं चाहते थे कि वह पहचाने जाएं. हालांकि अब उन्हें अपनी पहचान ज़ाहिर करनी ही होगी.

केंद्र सरकार ने यूनिफ़ाइड पेंशन स्कीम (यूपीएस) योजना को मंज़ूरी दे दी है. ये जानकारी इलेक्ट्रॉनिक और सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी मंत्री अश्विनी वैष्णव ने दी है. शनिवार को एक प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस में उन्होंने इसकी घोषणा की और कहा कि सरकारी कर्मचारियों की सामाजिक सुरक्षा को लेकर चिंता भी उठती रही है और पेंशन इसका अहम भाग है. उन्होंने कहा, "सरकारी कर्मचारी देशभर में लोगों की सेवा करते हैं और इससे समाज की एक व्यवस्था चलती है, समाज में उनका महत्वपूर्ण स्थान रहा है." उन्होंने सरकारी कर्मचारियों की नेशनल पेंशन स्कीम (एनपीएस) में सुधारों की मांग की बात की और कहा कि सरकार इस पर विचार कर रही थी और अब सरकार ने यूपीएस को मंज़ूरी दी है. अश्विनी वैष्णव ने कहा कि इस नई स्कीम से केंद्र सरकार के 23 लाख कर्मचारियों को फ़ायदा मिलेगा.

उत्तर प्रदेश पुलिस में सिपाही की नौकरी के लिए 23 अगस्त से परीक्षा शुरू हो रही है. पुलिस कॉन्स्टेबल भर्ती के लिए होने वाली ये परीक्षा 23, 24, 25, 30 और 31 अगस्त को आयोजित होगी. माना जा रहा है कि यूपी पुलिस में 60 हज़ार 244 पदों के लिए होने वाली इस भर्ती में 40 लाख से अधिक उम्मीदवार शामिल हो सकते हैं. परीक्षा के लिए 67 ज़िलो में 1,174 सेंटर बनाए गए हैं. ये परीक्षा इसी साल फ़रवरी में हुई थी लेकिन प्रश्न पत्र लीक होने के कारण परीक्षा रद्द करनी पड़ी थी.इसे लेकर उस वक़्त काफ़ी विवाद भी हुआ था.

NEW DELHI: In a first, the Supreme Court on Friday gave a retrospective application to Section 479 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) that mandates the release of undertrial first-time offenders lodged in prisons if the have served one-third of the maximum punishment prescribed for the offence allegedly committed by them. Though BNSS, along with Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita, came into force this year, on the request of ASG Aishwarya Bhati, a bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Sandeep Mehta said the beneficial provision would apply to all ertrial prisoners irrespective of the date of arrest and their going to priso. e enc or ere jai superinten ents to initiate steps or granto ai to those firsttime offenders who are lodged as undertrials and have served one- third of maximum imprisonment. It asked them to complete the process of making application to the court for release of such prisoners, who fulfil the criteria under Section 479, within 2 months and report back to the state govt's department concerned. Let the undertrial prisoners who meet the criteria spend this Diwali with their families," Justice Kohli said. Bhati also requested the court to ask the jail superintendents to take steps for release of undertrial prisoners, who though not first-time offenders but have served half of the maximum punishment prescribed for the offence. However, these two groups of undertrial prisoners would not get the benefit of early release from jail if they have been accused of committing a heinous crime. he bench asked state govts and the administrations of the Union Territories concerned to compile the data of release of these two categories of the undertrial prisoners and submit a status report to the court after two months. It posted the matter for hearing in Oct, by which time Justice Kohli would have retired from Supreme Court.

From heading a conglomerate that had a market cap larger than the Tata Group in 2007 and being the sixth richest man globally, to having to declare himself bankrupt before a UK court in 2019, Anil Ambani's fortunes have reflected that of his flagship financial services firm. The troubles began with the global financial crisis in 2008, which strained liquidity for financial services companies. Instead of consolidating, ADAG Group continued its expansion, making big ticket investments in a joint venture with Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks. There was also a string of acquisitions including Global Cloud Xchange, a global video game maker whic s renamed Zapak, UTV Television, Pipavav Shipyard and MTS teleco. The group's diversification into infrastructure, particularly Reliance Power, defence and media took its toll on finances as the entry was at the wrong end of the business cycle and made matters worse. Reliance Communications (Rcom), which was expected to be a cash cow, also took a hit because of excess leverage. Also, the fact that Rcom was running on code division multiple access (CDMA) technology, which was shut down as industry shifted to GSM, also impacted business. While other group companies faced their own challenges, at the core of Reliance Capital's downfall were governance issues, particularly related-party transactions. Reliance Capital's two main lending subsidiaries, Reliance Home Finance and Reliance Commercial Finance, went into default. The primary reason for the default was that these two companies had extended loans to related parties, which subsequently defaulted. Sebi's latest actions against Ambani and other senior officials of the ADAG group pertain to these transactions conducted by Reliance Home Finance. The final nail on the coffin for the financial services firm was the tightening of liquidity after the twin failures of IL&FS and DHFL. Because of governance issues, Reliance Capital's auditor PWC refused to sign the FY 19 balance sheet leading to the Reserve Bank of India finally superseding the firm's board initiating bankruptcy proceedings in November 2021.

Singh underlined the various opportunities for co-development and co- production of advanced weapon systems available in India under the ambitious bilateral defence-industrial cooperation roadmap, which was finalized in June last year, during his delegation-level meeting with US secretary of defence Lloyd J Austin in Washington on Friday. "The ministers held wide-ranging discussions on bilateral defence cooperation, industrial collaboration, regional security and other international issues," an official said. China's aggressive tactics in the Indo-Pacific also figured in the discussions, a source said. The first pact that was inked is the Security of Supplies Arrangement (SOSA), which will further integrate defence-industrial ecosystems of India and the US, while strengthening the resilience of their supply chains.

An Indian passenger bus with 40 people onboard plunged into Nepal's Marsyangdi river in Tanahun district on Friday, local police confirmed. The bus from Uttar Pradesh was traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu. “The bus bearing number plate UP FT 7623 plunged into the river and is lying on the bank of the river,” confirmed Tanahun DSP Deepkumar Raya. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner has said that efforts are underway to establish contact to find out if anyone from the state is involved in it. Further details are awaited.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has barred businessman Anil Ambani and 24 other entities, including former officials of Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL), from the securities market for five years for diversion of funds from the company, news agency PTI reported. The markets regulator has also imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore on Ambani. Sebi has restrained Ambani from being associated with the securities market, including as a director or Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) in any listed company, or any intermediary registered with the market regulator, for a period of 5 years. Sebi has also banned RHFL from the securities market for six months and slapped a fine of Rs 6 lakh on it. The 24 restrained entities include former key officials of RHFL Amit Bapna, Ravindra Sudhalkar and Pinkesh R Shah. Sebi has imposed a fine of Rs 27 crore on Bapna, Rs 26 crore on Sudhalkar and Rs 21 crore on Shah. Other entities, including Reliance Unicorn Enterprises, Reliance Exchange next Lt, Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd, Reliance Cleangen Ltd, Reliance Business Broadcast News Holdings Ltd and Reliance Big Entertainment Private Ltd, have been imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore each.

The prime suspect in the sexual assault of a schoolgirl at a fake National Cadet Corps (NCC) camp in Bargur area of Tamil Nadu died allegedly by suicide on Friday. Police said that the suspect identified as Sivaraman consumed rat poison before his arrest on August 19. He was receiving treatment at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Krishnagiri for a leg fracture, which he sustained while trying to escape from police. He was later shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Salem due to deteriorating health and passed away today. Sivaraman was one of 11 individuals including school authorities, who were arrested by the Bargur All Women Police. He had organised the fake NCC camp where an eighth-grade girl was sexually assaulted and several other girls were allegedly abused. Approximately 41 students including 17 girls, attended the camp. The assault was uncovered after the girl reported her trauma to her parents, who then filed a complaint with the police. The National Commission for Women (NCW) on August 21 said that it has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report about the sexual assault of a girl and sexual abuse of around 12 girls at a fake National Cadet Corps (NCC) camp in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri. The commission said it directed the Chennai's director general of police (DGP) to ensureF a fair and time-bound investigation into the matter. On its part, the NCC has clarified that it did not conduct any camp in the area and that the person involved in the incident has no connection with it. The district administration, too, said that NCC was not involved in organising the camp. The girls were being given counselling and psychological support through the district child protection unit. Their parents were also being given support and counselling.

The daylong Bharat bandh on Wednesday, called by Dalit and tribal organisations and supported by opposition parties, against the Supreme Court's verdict on sub-classification of Scheduled Castes affected normal life mainly in Bihar and Jharkhand as well as tribal areas of various states. Police resorted to baton-charge on protestors in Patna and used water canons to disperse them, while people broke barricades and marched towards the Dak Bungalow Chowk. About 10,000 people participated in the protest in various parts of Patna, with a large portion of protestors comprising students. Normal life was disrupted as bandh supporters staged ralliesand demonstrations in different parts of Jharkhand. The bandh had some impact in Gujarat's tribal belts, including in Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Surendranagra, Sabarkantha and Aravalli districts. NEW DELHI: Some protesters in Bihar tried to set a school bus on fire during Bharat Bandh agitation on Wednesday. A video shared by the news agency IANS showed agitators surrounding a yellow school bus in the Gopalganj area. Amidst the turmoil, a man was seen setting a tyre ablaze directly under the bus. The visuals showed the bus fully occupied by school children in uniform. The attempt, however, was thwarted by the police. The Bihar Police resorted to using lathi-charges and water cannons to scatter demonstrators who had set up blockades on railways and roads in support of the Bharat Bandh, which was organised to demand community-based reservation. The protesters caused disruptions to train services at the Darbhanga and Buxar railway stations. In addition, traffic flow was disrupted in several districts, including Patna, Hajipur, Darbhanga, Jehanabad, Purnea, Katihar, Muzaffarpur, and Begusarai. In response to these actions, the police employed baton-charges to disperse the protesters and restore order in the affected areas. The Patna district administration released a statement confirming that the Patna police filed three FIRs and took nine individuals into custody for allegedly taking matters into their own hands during the protests. In the district of Jehanabad, protesters and security personnel engaged in confrontations on National Highway-83 near Unta Chowk, resulting in the apprehension of five individuals. Protesters in various other districts, such as Madhepura, Muzaffarpur, Saran, Begusarai, Hajipur, Purnea, and Katihar, made attempts to obstruct traffic and set tyres ablaze. While back home in India people were transfixed by the massive evacuation of Indian medical students from Ukraine, choices for long-term Indian residents of the country were tough. Having dedicated decades to businesses and connections here, they simply couldn’t pack up and leave. “I had to shift my factory from Kyiv to Marshyntsy in Chernivtsi Oblast near the border with Romania. So many of my workers and their family members depended on me. I couldn’t abandon them,” says Nagender Parashar whose prosthetics manufacturing business and prosthetics centres have become a crucial source of hope for hundreds of Ukrainian amputees maimed by the war, “Slowly, I had to bring my staff to Marshyntsy and continue my work.” Ram Dange, another long-term Indian resident and businessman, elaborates on the challenges faced by the Indian community in Kyiv. “There were around 2,500 long-term Indian residents in Ukraine before 2022. Many of us got married and have families here. The outbreak of full-fledged war divided our families because we had to relocate our loved ones to safer locations and countries. But we had to stay behind for the sake of our businesses. We are now looking forward to PM Modi’s visit and have even made a joint appeal to him. We fully support his rejection of force in any dispute, and he should intervene to bring about a resolution to this heinous war.” Modi’s visit is the first by a sitting Indian PM to independent Ukraine.
